Rediscovering the Gospel: A 5-Day Devotional Journey

Estimated time to read: 3 min

Day 1: The Burden of Guilt

Scripture: Romans 3:23 – “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”

Reflection: Martin Luther’s early life was marked by an intense struggle with guilt and sin. Despite his devout practices, he found no peace. Like Luther, we often try to earn God’s favor through our efforts, forgetting that we all fall short. Today, reflect on areas where you might be trying to earn God’s love instead of receiving it freely.

Prayer: Lord, help me to recognize my own limitations and to rest in Your grace. Teach me to rely on Your righteousness, not my own.

Keywords: Guilt, sin, grace, righteousness, Martin Luther.

Day 2: A Revelation of Faith

Scripture: Romans 1:17 – “For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed—a righteousness that is by faith from first to last.”

Reflection: Luther’s breakthrough came when he understood that righteousness is a gift received by faith. This revelation transformed his life and sparked the Reformation. Consider how faith plays a role in your relationship with God. Are you living by faith or by works?

Prayer: Father, open my eyes to the truth of Your Gospel. Help me to live by faith, trusting in Your promises.

Keywords: Faith, righteousness, Gospel, Reformation, revelation.

Day 3: The Power of Scripture

Scripture: 2 Timothy 3:16 – “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.”

Reflection: The Reformation emphasized the authority of Scripture over tradition. Luther and other reformers believed that God’s Word should be accessible to all. Reflect on how you engage with Scripture. Is it the foundation of your faith and practice?

Prayer: Lord, give me a hunger for Your Word. Help me to seek Your truth in Scripture and to apply it to my life.

Keywords: Scripture, authority, Reformation, God’s Word, truth.

Day 4: The Five Solas

Scripture: Ephesians 2:8-9 – “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.”

Reflection: The Five Solas—Scripture alone, faith alone, grace alone, Christ alone, and glory to God alone—summarize the core beliefs of the Reformation. Reflect on these principles and how they shape your understanding of salvation and your relationship with God.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of salvation by grace through faith. Help me to live for Your glory alone.

Keywords: Five Solas, grace, faith, salvation, Reformation.

Day 5: Living the Reformation Legacy

Scripture: Matthew 28:19-20 – “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.”

Reflection: The Reformation was not just a historical event; it is a call to live out the Gospel in our daily lives. Consider how you can share the message of grace and faith with others. How can you be a part of God’s ongoing work in the world?

Prayer: Lord, empower me to be a witness of Your Gospel. Use me to spread Your love and truth to those around me.

Keywords: Reformation, Gospel, discipleship, witness, legacy.

This 5-day devotional invites you to explore the transformative power of the Gospel as rediscovered during the Reformation, encouraging a deeper understanding and application of these truths in your daily walk with Christ.
