In a world where value is often measured by material wealth and achievements, the story of Mary anointing Jesus with expensive perfume offers a profound lesson on the true worth of Christ. This narrative, found in John 12:1-11, challenges us to evaluate what Jesus means to us and how we express our devotion to Him.

Mary’s Extravagant Devotion

Mary’s act of anointing Jesus with a pound of expensive nard, worth nearly a year’s wages, is a striking example of selfless devotion. Her actions were not motivated by obligation or expectation but by a deep love and recognition of Jesus’ worth, the One who had done so much for her family, raising her beloved brother Lazarus back to life. In using her hair to wipe His feet, Mary demonstrated humility and reverence, acknowledging that even the most precious aspects of her life were not too valuable to offer to Jesus.

This act of worship parallels the story of the sinful woman in Luke 7:36-50, who anointed Jesus’ feet with her tears and perfume. Both women understood the depth of their need for Jesus and responded with acts of profound love and sacrifice.

Judas’ Misplaced Priorities

In stark contrast, Judas Iscariot’s reaction reveals a heart captivated by greed and self-interest. His objection to Mary’s act under the guise of concern for the poor exposes his true motivation—his love for money. This echoes the warning in 1 Timothy 6:10, where Paul writes, “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.”

Judas’ betrayal of Jesus for thirty pieces of silver (Matthew 26:14-16) further illustrates the danger of valuing material wealth over spiritual riches. His actions serve as a cautionary tale, reminding us to examine our own hearts and priorities.

The Worthiness of Christ

Jesus’ response to Judas underscores His unique worth. He reminds His disciples that while the poor will always be present, His time with them is limited. This statement is not a dismissal of the poor but a call to recognize the supreme value of Christ Himself. Our love for the poor id directly dependent upon and borne out of our love for Christ. As believers, our devotion to Jesus should surpass all other commitments, as He is the source of our salvation and the embodiment of God’s love that we are to believe in, worship, devote ourselves to, and pattern our lives after.

Philippians 2:9-11 affirms the exalted status of Jesus, declaring that “God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name.” Our response to His worthiness should be one of total surrender and worship, as seen in Revelation 5:12, where the heavenly hosts proclaim, “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!”

Living a Life of Devotion

The question we must ask ourselves is, “How much is Jesus worth to me?” Are we willing to lay down our most prized possessions, ambitions, and even our very lives in service of Him? Romans 12:1 urges us to offer our bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God, as our true and proper worship.

In a world that often values the temporary over the eternal, let us be like Mary, who recognized the infinite worth of Jesus and responded with a heart full of love and devotion. May our lives reflect the truth that Jesus is worthy of all our praise, honor, and sacrifice.
