Scripture: Galatians 5:22-26
Read Time: 3 min
In a world where words often come cheap, the call to live out our faith through action is more crucial than ever. Understanding biblical and Christlike love in these terms reveals a profound truth: love is not merely something we should say; it is something we must do. One powerful passage of Scripture that reveals the various way that Christian love is made manifest in our lives is Galatians 5:22-23. In it, the Apostle Paul outlines the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Interestingly, the first fruit he lists is love. Why? Because it is the one from which every other fruit flows and finds its source. In other words, if we love others (and when we love others) it will manifest itself in all the other fruit (attitudes and actions) of the Spirit.
The Primacy of Love
At the heart of the Christian life is love. Paul emphasizes that love is the chief virtue from which all other fruits flow. In Galatians 5:13, he reminds us that true Christian freedom is expressed through loving, sacrificial service to others. This echoes Jesus’ own words in John 15:13, where He states, “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” Love is the fulfillment of the law (Galatians 5:14) and the greatest of all virtues (1 Corinthians 13:13).
Empowered by the Spirit
These Christian virtues are not products of our own efforts but are the fruit of the Spirit’s work within us. Romans 5:5 tells us that “God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.” This divine empowerment enables us to live out these virtues, reflecting God’s love to the world. As believers, we are called to walk by the Spirit, crucifying the desires of the flesh daily (Galatians 5:24-25).
Living Out the Fruit of the Spirit
Each fruit of the Spirit is a manifestation of love in action:
A Call to Action
This text challenges us to examine our lives and ask whether we are truly living out these virtues. Are we allowing the Spirit to work through us, or are we still clinging to the works of the flesh? The call is clear: let us crucify the flesh with its passions and desires and walk in the Spirit, manifesting the love of Christ in every aspect of our lives.
As we root ourselves in God’s love, we become conduits of His grace, extending His love, joy, peace, and all the fruits of the Spirit to those around us. This is the essence of Christian living—love in action.
