Following the Master’s Example in Humble Service
Scripture: John 13:12–20
By: Sebastian Petz
“When He had washed their feet… He said to them, ‘Do you understand what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am.'”
Jesus had every right to demand honor. He is both Lord and Teacher—the highest authority. And yet, He knelt and washed dirty feet. His question is piercing:
“Do you understand what I have done to you?”
His service is not a contradiction of His Lordship—it is the expression of it.
Reflect on how Jesus’ humility shapes your view of leadership and authority.
Ask yourself: Am I more concerned with being served or serving others?
Lord, thank You for showing me that true greatness is marked by humility. Help me reflect Your servant heart in every relationship. Amen.
“If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example…”
Jesus’ act wasn’t meant to stay confined to that upper room. It’s a pattern for our lives.
He calls us to follow His example—to serve in the small, unseen, sometimes uncomfortable ways, reflecting His love and humility.
Identify one person today whom you can serve in a practical, selfless way.
Consider: Is there any task or role you’ve considered “beneath” you?
Jesus, show me how to follow Your example today. Teach me to serve with no thought of status or recognition. Amen.
“A servant is not greater than his master… If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.”
Knowledge alone doesn’t lead to blessing. Action does.
Jesus makes it clear: Following Him means serving others—not just understanding humility, but living it out daily.
Reflect on areas in your life where there’s a gap between what you know and what you do.
Ask: Where is God prompting me to move from knowing to doing?
Lord, let me not settle for knowledge without obedience. Help me experience the blessing that comes from living out Your example. Amen.
“Whoever receives the one I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.”
Our acts of humble service aren’t just random good deeds—they are representations of Christ Himself.
When you serve others selflessly, you’re pointing them to Jesus and the Father who sent Him.
Think of someone in your life who needs to see Christ through your service.
Pray for boldness to represent Jesus well today.
Jesus, help me remember that when I serve, I’m not just meeting needs—I’m reflecting You. Let my life point others to You. Amen.
“A servant is not greater than his master…”
If the Master was willing to stoop and wash feet, there’s no act of service too low for us.
Pride often whispers that certain tasks are beneath us. But Jesus’ life confronts that lie.
Real love is willing to get low.
Examine your heart: Is there anyone you’re unwilling to serve? Any task you’ve avoided out of pride?
Commit today to serve without limits.
Lord, strip me of pride and self-importance. Make me willing to serve as You served, joyfully and without hesitation. Amen.
The King knelt. The Lord served. The Teacher washed feet.
He calls us to do the same—not for recognition, but because He first loved us.
Will you follow His example today?
