The First Brothers: Worship, Murder, and the Grace of God

Genesis 4 is one of the most sobering chapters in all of Scripture. It records the first birth outside the Garden of Eden, the first act of worship after the Fall, the first murder, the first funeral, and the first grave. What began with Adam and Eve’s rebellion in Genesis 3 now spreads with astonishing speed. In just one generation, sin moves from disobedience to false worship, jealousy, hatred, violence, and death. The chapter confronts us with an uncomfortable but necessary truth: humanity’s greatest problem has never been our environment, our education, or our circumstances—it is the sinful condition of the human heart.
