The Prayer That Holds Us Together

Written by: Sebastian Petz

Scripture: John 17:20–26

Day 1 – Christ Prayed for You

Scripture: “I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word.” – John 17:20

Meaning:
In this single sentence, Jesus reaches beyond the upper room into the farthest edges of history — into your life and mine. The “these” are the eleven disciples, but the “those” are all future believers who will come to faith through the apostolic gospel. Before we ever took our first breath, Christ interceded for us. Our faith is not random. It is part of a divine plan, anchored in the prayers of the Son to the Father.

Meditation:
Pause and consider: You were on the mind of Christ the night before He was crucified. Your salvation is part of His eternal mission. You are living in the answer to His prayer.

Me:
Have I allowed the reality of Jesus’ personal intercession for me to sink into my heart? How might this truth change my daily confidence in His care and keeping?

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You that You thought of me before I ever knew You. Let the reality of Your intercession fill me with peace, gratitude, and trust in Your unfailing love. Amen.

Day 2 – Unity that Reflects the Trinity

Scripture: “…that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you…” – John 17:21

Meaning:
Christ’s prayer for unity is far deeper than organizational cooperation or sentimental agreement. He prays for a unity patterned after the eternal oneness of the Father and the Son. This unity is doctrinal (rooted in truth), relational (flowing in love), and missional (displaying the gospel to the world).

Meditation:
When we love one another in truth, the world sees something of the life of God Himself. Our unity becomes a living apologetic for the gospel.

Me:
Am I helping or hindering the unity of the church? Are my words, attitudes, and actions reflective of the oneness for which Jesus prayed?

Prayer:
Father, make me an instrument of Your unity. Guard my heart from pride and division, and help me reflect the oneness You share with the Son. Amen.

Day 3 – Glory Shared with His People

Scripture: “The glory that you have given me I have given to them…” – John 17:22

Meaning:
Glory in Scripture is the radiant display of God’s character and presence. Jesus declares that the glory given to Him by the Father — the glory of divine life, mission, and Spirit-empowered witness — is now given to His people. This is not a glory we generate; it is a glory we receive and reflect.

Meditation:
The world often pursues glory through power, wealth, or recognition. But true glory is the privilege of sharing in the life of Christ and making Him known.

Me:
Am I living for my own glory or for Christ’s? How does my life reflect the beauty, truth, and mission of Jesus to those around me?

Prayer:
Lord, thank You for sharing Your glory with me. Help me to live in such a way that Your character, love, and truth shine through my life. Amen.

Day 4 – Eternal Fellowship with Christ

Scripture: “Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory…” – John 17:24

Meaning:
The heart of Jesus’ desire is clear: He wants His people with Him forever, beholding His glory in the fullness of heaven. This is the hope of the believer — eternal, unbroken fellowship with Christ in the presence of the Triune God.

Meditation:
Eternal life is not just endless existence; it is endless joy in the presence of the One who loves you with an everlasting love.

Me:
Do I live with heaven in view? How might my priorities shift if I truly believed that my greatest joy is yet to come?

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, keep my heart fixed on the hope of being with You forever. Let this promise give me endurance, joy, and faithfulness today. Amen.

Day 5 – Love That Matches the Father’s Love

Scripture: “…that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them.” – John 17:26

Meaning:
The same love the Father has for the Son — infinite, perfect, eternal — is the love poured into the hearts of believers. This is not a lesser love or a second-tier affection; it is the very love that has existed within the Trinity for all eternity.

Meditation:
God’s love for you is not fragile. It is as unchanging and secure as His love for His own Son.

Me:
How often do I rest in the truth that I am loved with the same love the Father has for the Son? What fears or insecurities might melt away if I believed this fully?

Prayer:
Father, thank You for loving me with the same love You have for Your Son. Help me to live each day in the light of that truth, free from fear and full of joy. Amen.
