A Postcard from Pastor John Part 1

Written by: Sebastian Petz

Scripture: 2 John

Day 1 — Love That Is Anchored in Truth

Scripture: 2 John 1–3

Meaning

John opens his letter by joining two realities Scripture never separates: truth and love. His love for the church exists in the truth, and that truth “abides in us and will be with us forever.” For John, truth is not merely doctrinal accuracy—it is a living reality rooted in Jesus Christ Himself. Love that detaches from truth quickly becomes sentimentality, while truth without love becomes harsh and lifeless. The church’s health depends on holding both together.

Meditation

Truth is not something you graduate from or outgrow. It is something you live in. When your love flows from the truth of who Christ is and what He has done, it becomes steady, resilient, and life-giving rather than reactive or fragile.

Me

  • Where am I tempted to separate love from truth in my thinking or relationships?

  • Do my convictions shape my love, or does my desire to be liked shape my convictions?

Prayer
Lord, anchor my love in Your truth. Guard me from loving in ways that feel kind but drift from Christ. Help me to hold truth and love together, just as You do. Amen.

Day 2 — Walking in Obedient Love

Scripture: 2 John 4–6

Meaning

John rejoices that believers are “walking in the truth,” because truth is meant to be lived. He reminds the church of a command they have known “from the beginning”: to love one another. But John defines love clearly—love is walking according to God’s commandments. Obedience does not earn God’s love; it expresses it. Any definition of love that rejects obedience is not the love Scripture commands.

Meditation

Love is not measured by sincerity alone. True love takes God at His Word and orders life accordingly. When obedience is removed, love does not become freer—it becomes weaker.

Me

  • Is my love shaped more by my feelings or by God’s commands?

  • Where might obedience feel costly, but faithfulness requires it?

Prayer
Father, teach me to love as You define love. Help me to walk in obedience not out of fear, but out of grateful devotion to You. Amen.

Day 3 — Discernment in a Deceptive World

Scripture: 2 John 7

Meaning

John warns that “many deceivers have gone out into the world,” denying that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh. This denial attacks the heart of the gospel. False teaching often appears compassionate, enlightened, or progressive, but its true test is always Christology. Who do they say Jesus is? Discernment is not suspicion—it is faithfulness to the truth.

Meditation

Not every voice that sounds loving is leading toward Christ. Discernment protects faith by keeping Jesus at the center.

Me

  • Whose voices most influence my understanding of Jesus?

  • Am I testing teaching by Scripture or by popularity and tone?

Prayer
Jesus, guard my heart and mind. Help me to recognize truth and resist deception by clinging to who You truly are. Amen.

Day 4 — Abiding, Not Advancing Beyond Christ

Scripture: 2 John 8–9

Meaning

John warns against those who “go on ahead” and do not remain in the teaching of Christ. False teaching often presents itself as progress—something deeper, newer, or more advanced. But John insists that true faithfulness is not innovation; it is abiding. To leave Christ’s teaching is not growth—it is loss. Those who abandon the Son lose the Father as well.

Meditation

Growth in the Christian life does not mean moving beyond Jesus. It means knowing Him more deeply and trusting Him more fully.

Me

  • Am I ever tempted to seek something “more” than Christ?

  • What does it look like for me to abide faithfully today?

Prayer
Lord Jesus, keep me rooted in You. Protect me from restlessness that seeks novelty instead of faithfulness. Help me to remain in You. Amen.

Day 5 — Love That Protects the Gospel

Scripture: 2 John 10–13

Meaning

John commands the church not to support or endorse teachers who deny the truth about Christ. In his day, hospitality meant partnership. Love without discernment becomes complicity. Yet John closes his letter not with fear, but with joy. Truth guarded leads to joy shared. Faithfulness preserves fellowship and delight in Christ.

Meditation

Sometimes love must say “no” in order to say “yes” to Christ. True joy is not found in compromise, but in faithfulness.

Me

  • Where might clarity be a more loving response than silence?

  • How does faithfulness to Christ protect joy in my life?

Prayer
God, give me courage to love without compromise. Help me to guard the truth, protect Your church, and walk in the joy that flows from faithfulness to You. Amen.
