Genesis: In the Beginning...God

Written by: Sebastian Petz

Scripture: Genesis 1:1

Day 1 — Before Everything Else

Scripture:
“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1)

Meaning

The Bible opens not with humanity, morality, or explanation — but with God. Before there was time, matter, light, or life, God already was. Genesis 1:1 does not describe a moment within time, but the beginning of time itself. This verse establishes God as eternal, uncreated, and independent. Everything else exists because He spoke it into being.

Meditation

Our world constantly urges us to start with ourselves — our needs, our feelings, our desires. Scripture insists on a different starting point. Life only makes sense when it begins with God. When we forget this, confusion follows. When we remember it, clarity returns. The foundation of faith is not understanding everything, but trusting the One who existed before everything.

Me

  • Do I begin my days with God or with myself?

  • What changes when God becomes my starting point rather than my afterthought?

  • How does knowing that God existed before time shape my view of uncertainty?

Prayer:
Lord, remind me that You are before all things. Reorder my heart so that my life begins where Scripture begins — with You. Amen.

Day 2 — The God Who Is Eternal

Scripture:
“Before the mountains were brought forth… from everlasting to everlasting you are God.” (Psalm 90:2)

Meaning

Genesis 1:1 teaches that God is not bound by time. He created it. While everything in creation changes, ages, and fades, God remains the same. He has no beginning and no end. This attribute — God’s eternality — means He is never surprised, rushed, or uncertain.

Meditation

Time often feels like our greatest enemy. We fear running out of it. God never does. What overwhelms us does not overwhelm Him. What feels uncertain to us has already been seen by Him. The eternal God walks with His people moment by moment, never constrained by the clock that governs our lives.

Me

  • Where am I feeling pressure from time right now?

  • Do I trust that God stands outside my deadlines and delays?

  • How does God’s eternality comfort my fears?

Prayer:
Eternal God, help me rest in Your perfect timing. Teach me to trust You when I cannot see what lies ahead. Amen.

Day 3 — The God Who Creates

Scripture:
“By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God.” (Hebrews 11:3)

Meaning

Genesis tells us that God created all things ex nihilo — out of nothing. He did not reshape existing matter or battle chaos. He spoke, and creation obeyed. The word “created” in Genesis 1:1 is used only of God. What He does, no one else can do.

Meditation

Creation reveals both God’s power and His authority. If He can speak the universe into existence, then nothing in our lives is beyond His ability. The same God who formed galaxies also forms hearts. The Creator has not lost control of what He made.

Me

  • Do I truly believe God is powerful enough for my situation?

  • Where am I trusting my own strength instead of His word?

  • What would it look like to live in confidence of His power?

Prayer:
Creator God, remind me that nothing is too difficult for You. Help me trust Your power rather than my limitations. in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Day 4 — The God Who Owns All Things

Scripture:
“The earth is the LORD’s and everything in it.” (Psalm 24:1)

Meaning

If God created all things, then all things belong to Him. Genesis 1:1 confronts the idea that we are self-made or self-owned. Life is not ours to define independently. We are stewards, not owners. Everything we have exists by God’s will and for His glory.

Meditation

True freedom is not found in autonomy, but in surrender. When we resist God’s authority, life becomes heavy. When we submit to it, life finds order. Recognizing God as Creator places every part of life — work, relationships, finances, plans — under His lordship.

Me

  • Are there areas of my life I treat as my own rather than God’s?

  • What does surrender look like for me this week?

  • How does God’s ownership bring peace rather than fear?

Prayer:
Lord, everything I have comes from You. Teach me to live faithfully as a steward of Your grace. Amen.

Day 5 — From Creation to Christ

Scripture:
“In the beginning was the Word… and the Word became flesh.” (John 1:1, 14)

Meaning

The Bible begins and ends with the same truth: God speaks. John intentionally echoes Genesis to show us that the Creator entered His creation. The eternal Word took on flesh. The God who made all things stepped into time to redeem what sin had broken.

Meditation

Genesis shows us God’s power. The Gospel shows us His grace. The Creator did not remain distant from our suffering. He came near — to live, to die, and to rise again. The story that begins with creation finds its fulfillment in Christ.

Me

  • Do I see Jesus as both Creator and Savior?

  • How does knowing God came near shape my faith?

  • Am I living in response to grace or merely knowledge?

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, You are the Word made flesh. Thank You for entering my world to rescue me. Help me live for Your glory. Amen.
