Light Before the Sun

Scripture: Genesis 1:2-5

Day 1 — A World That Exists but Isn’t Finished

Meaning

Genesis 1:2 describes the earth as “without form and void.” The Hebrew phrase tohu wabohu does not mean evil or broken—it means unformed and uninhabitable. Creation exists, but it is unfinished. God has created, but He has not yet ordered or filled. From the very beginning, Scripture teaches us that emptiness is not the same as abandonment.

Meditation

Many of us live in seasons that feel unfinished—areas of life that exist, but lack clarity, direction, or fruitfulness. Genesis reminds us that God often works in stages. What feels like delay may actually be divine design. God is not threatened by what is incomplete.

Me

  • Where do I feel “unfinished” right now?

  • Am I mistaking waiting for abandonment?

  • Can I trust God’s process even when I cannot see the outcome?

Prayer
Lord, help me trust You in the unfinished places of my life. Teach me to wait with faith rather than fear, knowing that what You begin, You always complete. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Day 2 — Darkness Is Not God’s Enemy

Meaning

Genesis never says God created darkness. Darkness is simply the absence of light. It is not a rival force, not a threat, and not eternal. Darkness exists only until God speaks. From the very beginning, Scripture makes clear that darkness is subordinate to God’s will.

Meditation

We often treat darkness as if it has power over God—as if confusion, grief, or uncertainty mean He has lost control. But Genesis teaches the opposite. Darkness is never feared by God. It is only described.

Me

  • Where am I tempted to believe darkness is winning?

  • Do I view uncertainty as God’s absence or His setting?

  • How does this reshape my response to fear?

Prayer
God, forgive me for fearing the dark more than trusting Your Word. Help me remember that darkness never has the final word—You do. Amen.

Day 3 — The Spirit Who Hovers

Meaning

Before God speaks, His Spirit is already present. Genesis says the Spirit of God was “hovering over the face of the waters.” The image is not violent or chaotic, but protective and attentive—like an eagle hovering over its young. Chaos is never chaotic to God.

Meditation

Even when nothing seems to be happening, God is at work. The Spirit’s hovering reminds us that divine activity is not always loud or immediate. Sometimes God prepares long before He speaks.

Me

  • Where do I need to trust God’s unseen work?

  • Am I impatient for words when God is still hovering?

  • How might waiting deepen my faith?

Prayer
Spirit of God, help me trust Your quiet work in my life. Teach me to rest in Your presence, even before answers come. in Jesus name. Amen.

Day 4 — “And God Said”

Meaning

Creation turns on four simple words: “And God said.” God does not create through struggle, but through speech. His Word carries authority and power. The same Word that spoke light into existence continues to sustain and govern all things.

Meditation

We often look for solutions in action, effort, or control. Genesis reminds us that life begins when God speaks. His Word does not merely inform—it creates, restores, and gives life.

Me

  • Whose voice am I listening to most right now?

  • Do I believe God’s Word still has power over my life?

  • How might Scripture reshape my thinking this week?

Prayer
Lord, tune my heart to Your Word. Help me trust that what You say is enough to bring light, life, and change in my life. Amen.

Day 5 — Light That Has a Name

Meaning

God creates light before the sun, pointing us beyond physical illumination to divine revelation. The New Testament makes this connection clear: the God who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” (2 Cor 4:6) has revealed His glory in Jesus Christ. Light has a name.

Meditation

Jesus does not point us toward the light—He is the Light (1 John 1:1–5). Where He shines, chaos gives way to order, fear to faith, and death to life. Neutrality is never an option. We either walk in His light or remain in darkness.

Me

  • Am I walking daily in the light of Christ?

  • Where might I be lingering in shadows instead?

  • What would it look like to step fully into His light today?

Prayer
Jesus, You are the Light of the world. Shine into every corner of my heart, and lead me out of darkness into a faithful, obedient life. Amen.
