From Breath to Life: The Creation of Man

Speaker:
Passage: Genesis 2:4–7

In Genesis 2:4–7, Scripture slows the creation narrative and brings us to one of the most intimate moments in the entire Bible: the creation of the first human being. While Genesis 1 shows God speaking the universe into existence, Genesis 2 reveals the Creator personally forming man from the dust of the ground and breathing into him the breath of life. Humanity begins not with self-generated life, but with life given directly from God.

This passage reminds us that human life is both humble and dignified. We are formed from the dust, yet animated by the very breath of God. Our existence is therefore not accidental or autonomous—we live in complete dependence upon the Creator who gives us every breath.

Ultimately, Genesis 2 points forward to the greater life that God gives through Christ. Just as God breathed life into the first man, Jesus breathes spiritual life into His people through the Holy Spirit. The God who gave physical life in Eden now offers eternal life through the gospel.

In this sermon, we explore:

👉 The structural shift in Genesis from cosmic creation to human history through the tôlĕdōṯ (“generations”) formula (Genesis 2:4)

👉 Why Genesis introduces God as “the LORD God” (YHWH Elohim) and what this reveals about both His transcendence and covenant intimacy

👉 The world before the gardener—why Genesis emphasizes that there was “no man to work the ground” and what that teaches about humanity’s role in creation

👉 The powerful Hebrew wordplay between adam (man) and adamah (ground) and how it reveals both the humility and dignity of humanity

👉 The meaning of “the breath of life” (nishmat chayyim) and why human life exists only because God breathes life into His creatures

👉 How Genesis ultimately points forward to the gospel, where Christ breathes spiritual life into those who believe (John 20:22)

This passage calls us to humility, dependence, and faith. Every breath we take is borrowed breath from the Creator. And the God who formed us from dust now offers eternal life through His Son.
