In the Beginning…God
Where did everything come from?
Before questions of morality, meaning, or truth can be answered, one foundational question must be settled:
Why does anything exist at all?
In this opening message of our new series Genesis: In the Beginning, we turn to the very first verse of the Bible — a sentence that establishes the foundation for all of Scripture, all theology, and all reality:
“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1)
This sermon explores why Genesis begins not with humanity, not with science, and not with argument — but with God Himself.
From the opening words of Scripture, we see that God alone is eternal, sovereign, uncreated, and the source of all things. We examine the theological weight of Genesis 1:1, the identity of God as Elohim, the meaning of creation out of nothing, and how this verse sets the trajectory for the entire Bible — from creation, to fall, to redemption, and ultimately restoration.
We also consider the biblical account of origins in contrast to modern evolutionary theory, explore the remarkable order and fine-tuning of the universe, and show why even secular science increasingly acknowledges the necessity of intelligent design.
Most importantly, we trace how Genesis 1:1 finds its fulfillment in the Gospel of John:
“In the beginning was the Word… and the Word became flesh.”
The Creator did not remain distant from His creation — He entered it in the person of Jesus Christ to redeem what sin had broken.
