Truth on Trial: The Innocent Condemned, the Guilty Released

Passage: John 18:28โ€“40

In this passage, Jesus is brought before Pilate and put on trial. The religious leaders refuse to enter the praetorium for fear of ritual defilement, all while plotting the murder of the true Passover Lamb. Pilate interrogates Jesus about kingship, only to hear Him declare that His kingdom is not of this world but rooted in truth. And in one of the most cynical lines in all of Scripture, Pilate sneers: “What is truth?”

Yet Truth incarnate was standing right before him.

The trial ends with a shocking exchange: Barabbas, the guilty rebel, is released while Jesus, the innocent Son of the Father, is condemned. It is the gospel in miniature โ€” the guilty go free because the innocent is condemned.

โœจ Key Themes

๐Ÿ‘‰ Truth is not a proposition but a Person โ€” Jesus Christ, the incarnate Word.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Pilateโ€™s cynical question still echoes today: “What is truth?” Will we dismiss Him or receive Him?
๐Ÿ‘‰ The great exchange: the guilty are set free because Christ bore our punishment.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Barabbas, “son of the father,” walks free because the true Son of the Father took his place.

If youโ€™ve ever wrestled with questions of truth, justice, or the meaning of the cross, this passage gives Godโ€™s answer in the clearest possible way: His name is Jesus.
