The First Brothers: Sin, Sacrifice, and the Sovereign Grace of God
The first death recorded in human history was not caused by disease, old age, or an accident. It was one brother deliberately murdering another.
Genesis 4 reveals how quickly the poison of sin spread after humanity’s rebellion in Eden. In just one generation, disobedience gives way to false worship, jealousy, anger, hatred, violence, and death. The story of Cain and Abel exposes the depravity of the fallen human heart and warns us that sin never intends merely to visit—it always intends to rule.
Yet Genesis 4 is not only a record of humanity’s growing corruption. It is also a testimony to the sovereign and preserving grace of God. The Lord graciously warns Cain before judgment, hears the cry of innocent blood, restrains further violence, and preserves His promise even after Abel is murdered and Cain is exiled.
Ultimately, the story of the first brothers points us forward to Jesus Christ, the greater Abel. Abel’s blood cried out from the ground for justice, but the blood of Christ speaks a better word—offering forgiveness, reconciliation, and salvation to everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord.

📖 Read the text for yourself this week: Genesis 4.
Sin entered the human heart after the Fall and quickly spread through worship, relationships, families, and society. Yet the kingdom of darkness could not destroy the promise of God. The promised Seed has come, the greater Abel has shed His blood, and Jesus Christ has secured redemption for all who trust in Him.
