“Do you support Israel?” It sounds like a simple question—until we ask what exactly we mean by Israel. The Jewish people? The modern State of Israel? Its present government? The biblical nation descended from Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob? Or the future Israel Scripture says God will restore under her Messiah?

In Part 3 of Israel in God’s Story, we turn to Romans 9–11 to bring biblical clarity to one of the most debated issues facing Christians today. Scripture teaches that the Jewish people remain Israel and that God’s gifts and calling concerning them are irrevocable. But covenant election does not guarantee individual salvation, nor does it make the modern State of Israel—or any human government—morally infallible.

The Christian position is neither erasure nor canonization. We neither pretend Israel means nothing nor pretend Israel can do no wrong. Instead, we see Israel as Scripture does: chosen by grace, accountable to God, presently in unbelief, beloved for the sake of the fathers, and desperately in need of her Messiah.
