Passage: John 17:11–19

In this section of Jesus’ High Priestly Prayer, the Savior doesn’t offer His disciples a final pep talk—He offers them something far more powerful: a prayer of consecration.

On the night before the cross, Jesus prays for those the Father gave Him. Not for their escape, but for their endurance. Not for comfort, but for consecration. He intercedes that they would be kept by the Father’s name, protected from the Evil One, sanctified in the truth, and sent into the world just as He was sent.

In this sermon from John 17:11b–19, Pastor Sebastian walks through this sacred portion of Scripture in four parts:

  • 🕊️ A Name That Keeps Us (v. 11b) — Jesus invokes the “Holy Father” and asks that His disciples be kept in the name that reveals God’s character and covenantal faithfulness.
  • 🤝 A Unity That Reflects Heaven (v. 11c) — Jesus prays not for organizational unity, but for a supernatural oneness patterned after the Trinity itself.
  • 🛡️ A Protection from the Evil One (vv. 12–15) — The Good Shepherd who lost none now entrusts His disciples to the Father’s grip, even amidst the hatred of the world.
  • 🔥 A Sanctification for Mission (vv. 16–19) — Jesus sets His disciples apart by the truth of God’s Word and commissions them into the world, just as He was sent.

This is not a prayer just for the Twelve—but for all who belong to Christ. If you are His, this prayer is for you.
