The Garden, the Glory, and the Cup | John 18:1–11 | 8.17.2025
In John 18:1–11, we step into the Garden of Gethsemane—the place where Jesus is arrested.
This is no ordinary moment. Here, the contrast between Adam in Eden and Jesus in Gethsemane is on full display.
Adam fell in the garden, bringing curse and death to all humanity.
But Jesus, the greater Adam, stood firm in the garden, embracing the cup of wrath that Adam’s sin—and ours—deserved.
In this passage we witness:
- Judas’ treacherous betrayal with a kiss.
- The staggering display of Jesus’ divine authority as His words, “I am,” send soldiers sprawling to the ground.
- Peter’s misguided sword-swinging zeal, met by Jesus’ rebuke and mercy.
- The Son’s perfect obedience as He accepts the Father’s cup.
This is not simply a story of betrayal and arrest—it is the story of Christ’s glory revealed in the hour of His suffering.
Join us as we see how Jesus, with full authority and submission, steps forward to embrace the cross—demonstrating that even in betrayal, violence, and darkness, the sovereign plan of God is unfolding for our salvation.
